Sestao

Description

Sestao City has a population of approximately 28,300 (2016) with an urban area of 3.5 km2 giving with a population density of 8,085 persons per km2. Sestao is located in Bizkaia, one of the three provinces of the Basque Country. Situated on the left bank of the Nervion River, Sestao belongs to the shared conurbation of Bilbao, Barakaldo, Portugalete and Santurtzi. The city is very well connected to the surrounding communities through road, rail and metro, and a future tram development, which will connect the city to the Leioa Campus
of the University of the Basque Country, making the commuting system more efficient and sustainable through an intermodal station.

Located 11 km from Bilbao, Sestao, is a municipality of 28.000 inhabitants with a strong post-industrial character. It has an area of 3.5 km2 where only 0.9 km2 are dedicated to residential use and the rest is used for industrial purposes. The area of intervention within the project + CityxChange, namely, QA1 ARI TXABARRI, is going through processes of deindustrialization and currently suffers high rates of unemployment. Most of the buildings in DA1 ARI TXABARRI are private buildings of the 1920s in the post-industrial area and where the public housing stock of the city council and the Basque Government is also located.  The private residential buildings were built in wood, thus resulting in poorly ventilated interior rooms and without natural light distribution. There are also public equipment linked to industrialization that must be recovered and put into value with new uses. On the other hand in DA2 LA PUNTA – VEGA GALINDO is the area where the first 163 public houses have been built. The area will go through a redevelopment process Our challenge is to make the city more accessible and friendly, with a cleaner industry (services) that continues to generate wealth and provide sustainable  resources to improve the quality of life of its citizens.
